Modesty is the Best Policy

Modesty:

The word is defined as a mode of dress and deportment intended not to encourage sexual attraction in others. It is freedom from vanity, regard for decency, an attitude of humility in behavior, speech, dress, and in life. It is unpretentious, sexual reserve, and simplicity. Modesty is important for many reasons. It shows character, it effects how others respond to you, it distinguishes you from others, and can contribute to keeping you in good health. It also shows who you worship and who you serve. Modesty is shown to be one of the character traits that marks God's people. It is akin to discretion, purity, and self control, it is a state of mind or disposition. It reflects the heart, who you are as a person on the inside. In 1st Corinthians 8: 9-13 we as people are told not to be a stumbling block to others. We are our the keepers of our brothers, (and sisters). Modesty is often discussed only when it pertains to females, but men and boys can be modest as well. They should also keep themselves covered, and their pants pulled up, wearing nothing too tight or loose. When you are deciding what to wear are you thinking about how to gain the attention of others, causing them to lust or envy you, or are you thinking about protecting people from such feelings? Are you thinking about serving, helping, and loving others or are you trying to compete and prove that you are better than others? Do you genuinely respect and care for yourself, or are you putting on fake confidence and need the approval of others to make you feel good? Are you wearing certain clothing to keep up with fashions and fit in with the majority, or are you taking a stand, and finding comfort within who you are as a person outside of what you wear? Your wardrobe is an outward statement of your personal and private beliefs or motivations.

Clothing that emphasizes cleavage, is too tight or short, shows too much skin, or too much leg is immodest. Society encourages us to "let it all hang out", "express ourselves", and be sexy, however this does effect how we are perceived. The word sexy comes from the word sex, which is what you advertise with certain pieces of clothing. Many women find fault with a man for lusting, but it is our job to help them maintain self control. This also helps keep us from worldly dangers, such as abuse, rape, and violent slurs spoken against us. For those of you who are married, you must remember that your bodies are not your own. Respect what belongs to your husband, or future husband if you are not yet married. 1st peter 3-4 says: "Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold,or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price". You should also be an example to the children. People seem to take you seriously, show more respect, and are more willing to help you when you take care of yourself.

What about Health?

Modest dress promotes good health. We have been taught to believe that less clothing aids in keeping us cool, however, the opposite is actually true. Keeping your limbs and skin covered regulates blood flow, and protects from the sun. Regular circulation allows your body to be at a balance all the way through and keep you from overheating, headaches, colds, and other forms of sickness. Skirts, dresses and other modest well fitting clothes allow enough room for air flow as a cooling agent, and sweat which helps keep the body cool also works well. Depending on where you live it can get very windy and extremely cold, but it doesn't mean that you cant stay warm and cozy while remaining modest in your long skirts and dresses. During these harsh months some of the items that you can use are leggings, leg warmers, tights, or stockings, socks, thermals and tall boots. There are many different types of these materials, and a variety of choices. What about belts, corsets, or shoes, like heels? Do these effect our health? The answer is yes. Tight belts, and corsets don't allow the muscles to freely move, can effect bowel movements, and cause pressure within the lungs, making it hard to breathe. These things also hinder digestion. your choice of shoes also draw attention, changing the way you walk and can be hazardous to your health. Multiple studies have proven this fact. Heels contribute to negative effects on the muscles, tendons, back, knees, bones, and posture. Heels can be painful as well, and yet we feed into the whole beauty is pain idea, and displease God, who does not want us to put ourselves through pain. Some of the studies articles, and books have been compiled by the American Osteopathic Association, the Huffington Post, the New York Times, Business Insider, and Shape. Some people make the argument that finding modest clothing can be a hassle, however, respectable clothing can be found at thrift stores for really cheap, even at just 2 dollars sometimes.

The Meaning of Nakedness

Marriage is the one relationship where we can stand before God, and ourselves and be naked and unashamed. While there are a few exceptions, nakedness in the bible often suggests weakness, need, and humiliation (Deuteronomy 28:48, Job 1:21, and Isaiah 58:7). in Genesis, our first parents, Adam and Eve were originally clothed with light. After they disobeyed God, they realized their nakedness, and tried to clothe themselves. This was the first experience of guilt expressed.God considered their nakedness to be a shame.Their clothing, or the way we sometimes think to cloth ourselves wasn't sufficient. They had to be re-clothed according to His standards. The clothes He made were warm and strong, but also coarse, and very plain. When we show our nakedness, we are saying that we don't mind being shameful. We constantly remind God of our sin.

Priced Far Above Rubies

We are told in 1st Corinthians that our bodies are the temples of the Holy Ghost. God needs a clean place to dwell Proverbs 31 describes a virtuous woman, and says her price is far above rubies. We are God's treasures, and he wants us to honor, and protect ourselves. We cover other things that we find precious; a car in a garage, jewelry in a box, clothes in garment protectors, money in a bank, sage, or purse, and the same should be for our bodies when we realize how valuable we are to him. We should have restraint for he purpose of exalting God, and not ourselves. We can still be cute, look attractive, smile sweetly, and dress modestly.

How to Get a Freelance Job

In these days of low salaries and high unemployment rates, it can be difficult to make ends meet. As a result, more and more people have begun freelancing, or at least looking into offering their services on a freelance basis as a side hustle. Here are some steps you can take to get your first freelance job or increase your business and help make freelancing a viable career path for you.

Freelance Job

Define Your Ideal Job

This may sound obvious, but in order to get started freelancing, you really ought to know what you want to get out of it and what you have to offer. First, answer these questions:
  • What services can I provide? Writing may be the first freelance job people think of, but there are tons of other jobs out there that you can do on a freelance basis. I've been a freelance editor for ten years, and I know of graphic designers, computer programmers, photographers, interior decorators, housecleaners, and teachers who make their livings freelance. Just about any skill you have can be leveraged to provide a service people need on a freelance or contract basis.
  • How much should I charge? If you're just starting out and freelancing on the side of your day job, or your spouse's income already supports your family, you can afford to take some low-paying jobs while you build your reputation. If you provide the sole support of your family, do some math to decide which jobs are worth your time and which aren't before you start looking.
  • How many hours do I want/need to work? Do you want to freelance full-time or part-time? If part-time, how many hours per week can you devote to working? Don't forget about time you need for paperwork (billing, taxes) and hunting down new clients.
Freelancing is the pefect lifestyle for some people, but make sure you know the pros and cons before jumping in with both feet.

Networking to Find Freelance Jobs

Even in the digital age, there's nothing like good, old-fashioned networking to get you a job. You can (and should!) use your contacts and friends on LinkedIn and Facebook to find leads, but the single best thing you can do is meet people and offer them your services in person.
  • Call former colleagues to see if their employers are outsourcing any work that you can do. (This is how I get most of my editing jobs.)
  • Join your local chamber of commerce and attend networking meetings. Don't just shake hands, though — be creative in offering your services. If someone mentions designing a new website, mention that you do web copywriting and would love to help them out (if it's true, of course). If you do graphic design, bring along some sample logos or corporate branding work you've done to show anyone who asks what you do.
  • Talk to the people you see all the time. Maybe the owner of the independent coffee shop you frequent is looking to do some advertising; pitch him your services as a writer/designer/photographer (or whatever relevant skill you have). Chat with the folks at church and at your kids' soccer game. Someone out there needs your skill to get their work done!
  • Don't forget to hand out business cards (or virtual business cards) to your new contacts. They need a way to get in touch with you AND remember what you do.

Find Freelance Jobs Online

Finding freelance jobs online can get a little hairy. There are plenty of jobs out there, but many pay an extremely low rate, making them not worth your time unless you're just trying to make some pocket change on the side. Here are some of the more popular sites to search:
Freelance Job Site
Prospects
 oDesk.com
plenty of jobs posted, but pay is often abysmal
Elance.com
guaranteed payment; higher-paying jobs are hotly contested
Guru.com
tech-heavy job listings
Craigslist.com
don't forget to check out gigs as well as jobs
Freelancer.com
this site gets many bad reviews; use it as a last resort

In addition to the general freelancing and employment websites (don't forget Monster and CareerBuilder), plenty of career paths have niche job websites (such as Mediabistro for writers and social media marketers) that also list freelance positions.

Cold Calling

Your last resort for landing a client for your freelancing business will be cold-calling (or sending unsolicited resumes). The success rate for this is extremely low; you'll multiply your chances a thousand times by sending your resume to someone you know instead.

But if you're absolutely desperate, decide which company to work on. Find out who does the hiring of freelancers (it's probably not human resources), and target your pitch directly to that person. Show what you can do, but don't be pushy or obnoxious. This person did not ask for your resume and does not owe you a phone call or email if she is not interested in your services. Overall, you'll still be better off if you can make her acquaintance some way first (LinkedIn counts!).

How to Make Money From oDesk

What is oDesk?

oDesk is an online marketplace which connects employers and freelance workers. The site is safe and easy to use, helping to avoid scams for both parties. Employers simply advertise a job, contractors bid and compete for the position, the job is awarded, contractors complete the work and get paid! There is great earning potential, especially for contractors with specialized skills. Read on to learn more about oDesk and how you can harness your earnings.

How to Start

Create Your Contractor Profile

Start by joining oDesk here and create your Contractor profile. A complete profile, including providing details like your title, objective, and availability will ensure you will stand out among the rest. Many new Contractors fail to take the time to complete their profile in full, prohibiting them from obtaining contracts. Make sure to give as much information as possible about yourself without being too personal.

Take Tests

oDesk provides Employers with qualification tests to help with wean out candidates for their job postings. Contractors have a better chance of being picked for a job if they complete a test relevant to their field. For example, a web developer may choose to take a PHP, CSS or Java test. The test results will be displayed on your profile, unless you specify to hide the results. Make sure to take the oDesk Readiness Test so that you know all the ins and outs of the site.

Search and Apply for Jobs

Now that you have your profile ready, you'll want to start applying for jobs. Search for jobs by category or keywords. Once you have found a job which interests you, apply for it by placing a bid. You can either propose an amount that will be paid to you, or the overall fee that will be charged to the employer. Insert a customized cover letter in order to outline your skills and any information that is needed for the application. For fixed rate projects, you will have to enter the duration of the project or the amount of time you believe it will take to complete the job. Agree to the terms and conditions, then hit apply! The employer will review your application and either decline your offer, invite you to a virtual interview, or hire you straight away.

Increase Your Job Quota

When you first sign up for oDesk, you are only permitted to apply for two jobs at any one time. You can increase your allowance by completing your Readiness Test, taking four or more other tests, and completing the ID verification process. The maximum job quota is twenty jobs at any one time. When a job posting has been removed or expired, a position has been filled, or you have been hired, your quota will allow for more job applications.

Your Questions Answered

There is a wide variety of jobs available in a number of different sectors including administration support, customer service, sales, web development, writing, translation, and design.

When working under an hourly contract, you will be required to use the oDesk Team Desktop or iPhone Application. This will log your time, take periodic screen shots, measure your activity level, and enable your employer to contact you by IM. Your earnings will be based on time logged via the Team Workroom.

How much can I earn?

There is no set amount when earning on oDesk. You determine your worth, hours you are available to work, and who you want to work for. There are a wide variety of employers looking for either high quality or low cost contractors to help them to complete their projects. Place bids for projects based on what you think your time is worth.

How do I find top paying jobs?

You can base fixed rate search on the employers budget. The sliding scale is between $0-20K+. Once you have selected the range you are inquiring about, you will be provided with jobs based on those budget specifications.

How to Make Money From oDesk

5 Ways How to Get Employers Interested

1. Market Yourself

Remember, you are going to be competing with hundreds of contractors for the best jobs. In order for an employer to find you, you have to stand out. You may be the most fabulous worker, but they don't know that. For example, bump up your title from "Web Designer" to "Talented PHP Expert with Top Industry Experience".

2. Start Low then Reach for the Sky

Most oDesk contractors start by offering lower bids on jobs to obtain more oDesk hours. After you have established a good feedback score, you can then start asking for a higher rate of pay. This is up to your discretion as you are the only one who can set your rate of pay.

3. Write a Good Cover Letter

Just like any job application, it is required that you submit a cover letter with your oDesk bid. Write a clear, concise and thoughtful cover letter which is free from any grammatical errors. Avoid using copy-pasted letters as most employers can usually identify these straight away. You want them to know that you genuinely want to work for them.

4. Keep a Good Feedback Score

Employers like to review your past employment history on oDesk before hiring. After a contract is completed, you will be required to provide feedback to your employer and vice versa. Always try to maintain professionalism when dealer with your employers, as it will be reflected in your feedback score. A good feedback score is often required when applying for jobs. If your score does not meet the requirements, you may have difficulty being hired.

5. Inspire with a Top Notch Portfolio

Do you have current work that you're able to show off? Add it to your oDesk profile to let employers see what you're capable of. If you don't have anything to show, create new content to post, i.e. new graphic design work, writing samples, etc. When they see how good you are, they'll just have to have you.
